Southern Virginia University and George Mason University Welcome Sid Fuchs as Guest Lecturer
On February 19, Sid Fuchs, President and CEO of MacAulay-Brown, Inc. and author of the strategic networking book, Get Off the Bench, spoke separately at two major Virginia-based Universities. As a guest lecturer, Fuchs imparted his expertise and counsel on the importance of developing a strategic network and the power of leadership.
At Southern Virginia University (SVU), a private Liberal Arts college located in Buena Vista, Fuchs spoke to more than 100 students, providing his expertise and insights on developing and maintaining a strategic network. “Trust is the currency of all relationships,” he told the audience. “To develop a true network that is effective, you must build valuable relationships. Get out of the mindset that you need to push your business card and your agenda, and instead, think in terms of how you can help the people you meet.”
During the question and answer session, a student asked Fuchs’ advice on the best way to network straight out of college. Fuchs responded, “A great way to break into a network is to get involved by working with a charitable organization. Not only will you be giving back to the community, but you will meet all kinds of interesting people.”
In closing, Fuchs posed a poignant question to the students, asking, “How do you know what relationships you need?” After giving the audience a moment to ponder, he said, “You don’t. You always need to be meeting and building relationships with as many people as possible. Unfortunately, when you need a relationship, it’s too late to build it.”
“Sid’s presentation on the value of strategic networking generated thoughtful conversation throughout the day and into the evening,”

Later that day, Fuchs presented to a group of George Mason University MBA students participating in the college’s Capstone Leadership course. Speaking to a group of mostly mid-level professionals in government and industry, he focused his remarks on leadership, networking and career progression.
The MBA students were particularly interested in Fuchs’ thoughts about the steps it takes to advance one’s career. “First, you have to do the basics: be competent, be bold and make strategic decisions, for example,” he counseled. “However, successful executives understand that moving from an individual contributor to a leadership role means a shift in mindset. You must be willing to give up some of the skills you learned as an individual contributor and acquire the additional skills required to manage and lead effectively.”
Located in the heart of Northern Virginia’s technology corridor near Washington, D.C., George Mason University is recognized as an innovative, entrepreneurial institution with global distinction in a range of academic fields.
